Revd Dr Claire Nye Hunter

Claire was born in Pretoria and matriculated at Capricorn High School in Pietersburg (now Polokwane) in 1977. She obtained Honours degrees in Social Work and Religious Studies at UCT, then completed a Masters in Theology at Fuller Theological Seminary in the USA (1991) and a PhD in Theology (John’s Gospel) through SATS in 2016.

Since her ordination in 1994 (27 years ago), she has thoroughly enjoyed parish ministry (Bonteheuwel, Hout Bay and Grahamstown Cathedral), school and student chaplaincy as well as lecturing part-time initially at Cornerstone Christian College and later at the College of the Transfiguration.  Her PhD wove together the threads in the fabric of her life and ministry – drawing on insights from Social Work and Psychology as well as Pastoral Care and her deep love of the Scriptures (in particular the Gospel of John). She describes herself primarily as a pastor and a teacher.

She comes to us after 13 years as assistant priest at the Cathedral in Grahamstown, where her husband, Andrew, was the Dean and senior priest of the Diocese. She was appointed by the Bishop as Canon Chancellor and a member of Chapter in 2016.

The Hunters have two daughters: Rachel (b 1995) and Nicola (b 1997). Both are currently students – Rachel in Education at UCT and Nicola in Veterinary Science in Pretoria. Their two dogs, Rocket and Lyla, are also special members of the family!
