Welcome to St. Thomas's
We hope this website will give you an idea of what St Thomas's has to offer and what is happening in our parish. We are so pleased you are taking the time to check us out and look forward to welcoming you to the family of St Thomas's Church. It is always a joy to welcome new members to our community, and if you are interested in exploring joining our church family, we would love to hear from you or join us at one of our services on Sunday.
We will become a church whose people are united in the desire to know and obey God’s particular will for us and in so doing by the power of the Holy Spirit to bring Christ’s salvation, healing, compassion and peace into a society transformed by Him.
St Thomas’s Church was built in 1864-5, as a Mission Chapel in the parish of St Paul’s, Rondebosch. The original stone chapel, without chancel or transept, was built to a design by Sophy Gray (wife of Robert Gray, the Bishop of Cape Town) who was instrumental in designing some 40 stone churches in South Africa. The building was originally used as a mission school, but was extended by Herbert Baker in 1894 and modified by him again in 1903, and was formally dedicated on the 20th December 1903. The church was substantially enlarged in 1966 when the thatched roof was replaced by a tiled roof, the sanctuary enlarged and the North and south transepts were added. The Parish is situated in Rondebosch, which is an old, established residential area in Cape Town’s southern suburbs. There are many schools and retirement homes in the area, and the University of Cape Town is close by, so the Parish is the church of choice for a number of people. We welcome residents and visitors to our Sunday and weekday services. Our church services are generally traditional with a family emphasis at the 9h30 service on Sundays. Please make yourself known to one of the priests if we can be of any assistance to you.
